Bay Club Owner Boats Kona's Biggest Fish of the Year
Printed with permission from The Bay Club

Richard Friese and his wife Ann have been owners at The Bay Club since 1996. Each year they leave behind a chilly Minnesota winter to warm up on the Kohala Coast, and go fishing. On their fifth trip with Captain Chip Fischer on the Hanamana they had the experience that every angler dreams about: hooking up to a giant blue marlin.

Captain Fischer was trolling about six miles off the coast having a conversation about wiring a big fish with deckhand Andy Powers when they saw a huge dark shape. After a minute of holding their breath the fish hit the outrigger lure and took off. Four hundred yards of line left the reel in a flash, and the contest between angler and fish was on.

An hour and a half later the angler was declared the winner when Powers was able to grab the leader and bring the behemoth to gaff. Word soon was out on the radio that a giant marlin was going to be weighed in at the Fuel Dock, and a crowd gathered to congratulate the proud group aboard Hanamana.

Friese, an electrical contractor, was overwhelmed by the reception at the Fuel Dock and said he enjoyed making a lot of new friends there. The couple returned to The Bay Club with a set of pictures to prove that this was not another fish story! At 755 pounds this marlin tops the list of fish caught off the Kona Coast this year.
