Marriott's Kaua`i Beach Club - Lihue, Hawaii
-by Brian E. Smith
Are you looking for the perfect combination of convenient location and beachfront setting
in a tropical timeshare resort? Then look no further than the Kaua'i Beach Club.
As Marriott Vacation Club Resort owners, our family has a timeshare property at the Kaua'i Beach Club, located
on beautiful Kalapaki Beach with a stunning lush backdrop that is just minutes from the main airport in Lihue.
The bay-front beach at the edge of the property is convenient for swimming, surfing and boogie boarding.
The timeshare resort is co-located with the Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club hotel in a complex featuring
one of the Island's largest outdoor pools with 5 whirlpools arranged around it, a full spa, fitness center, two
18 hole golf courses, and tennis. The kiddy pool is a plus for families like ours with young swimmers. The lobby
is expansive, finished in cool marble and tropical woods. Its centerpiece is a beautifully restored koa wood canoe
that was built between 1860 and 1890 for Prince Kuhio, a member of the Island royalty. Gardens, fish ponds, and
waterfalls in the center courtyard provide quiet spots for relaxing. With one "Aloha" season all year,
timeshare owners don't have to think about red, yellow, or green weeks.
The one- and two-bedroom villas are located on the oceanfront or with ocean views. Unlike many other timeshare resorts, the units do not have full kitchens and so it is helpful
to have a good variety of restaurants in close proximity. Fortunately, there are many dining options within the
resort, including a Pacific Rim buffet and a poolside grill. My family's favorite is Duke's Canoe Club & Barefoot
Bar, an open-air restaurant fronting the resort and honoring Hawaii surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku with gorgeous
views of the sand and surf. There are excellent dining options close by in Lihue as well. A favorite of ours is
the Barbeque Inn, offering American, Asian and Hawaiian cuisine in a home style diner with friendly service. Going
even further afield, Gaylord's restaurant is located in a historic home one mile from Kihue and is known for its
venison, lamb, seafood, pastas and desserts. For simple pleasures, we enjoy stopping at the local roadside produce
stands to pick up some tropical fruit for a light snack.
Shopping is within walking distance of the resort towards the Harbor and includes a Crazy Shirts store. We have
enjoyed buying tropical fish or other Island-theme t-shirts to remember our family trips to the different islands.
Kaua'i is an inviting place and we have visited several times recently. A unique feature
of the Island is the chickens running everywhere since Hurricane Iniki wrecked their cages and set them loose.
Unexpected things do happen on vacation and during one of our visits we had to make a quick trip to the local
hospital emergency room. Much to our relief, the nurses and doctors were among the most attentive, professional
and caring that we have ever met.
All in all, Kaua'i offers beautiful scenery and many wonderful activities, and the Kaua'i Beach Club is a comfortable
spot from which to explore the Island.
