ASIA

  THAILAND:
Who would like to address this person's question? --" I am presently a vacation counselor with Hilton Grand Vacation Club. I am interested to enter in contact with a person in the same industry in Phuket.

I am returning to Phuket soon for some vacations. Meanwhile, while there, I would like to consider the option to move and work there. Before that, I need to speak with somebody in the industry about the working conditions and other informations in Phuket.

Thank you for help in that matter."

MALAYSIA:
KUALA LUMPUR: Mines City Hotel Bhd (MCH), owner and operator of the Palace of Golden Horses Hotel (PGH), plans to set up a chain of hotels overseas as part of its long term strategy to promote its timesharing Country Heights Vacation Club.

Country Heights Holdings Bhd's (CHHB) managing director,
Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew, said that the company has earmarked China as the first place to set up the hotel.

Mines City aims to get 200,000 members for the time sharing package within five years and increase it to two million members in the long run, he said at a press conference Tuesday to announce MCH's public/placement share offer.

MCH is offering 200 million new ordinary shares priced at RM1.00 each as part of its plan to raise RM200 million in additional capital for Mines City.

The public offering represents 47.6 percent stake of Mines City and the proceeds from this public offering would be used to partly settle the inter-company loan due to CHHB, Mines City's holding company.

Lee said MCH planned to focus on timesharing as part of its new growth area under a long term expansion plan.

• Beijing Happy Holiday Hotel
• Huangshan Hotel
• China Anda (Zhaoqing) Swiss Garden Resort

AUSTRALIA

Both Ken May (RCI's head hoohah) and Jack McConnell (Cendant's timeshare group head hoohah) were said to be on their way to Australia last week. Lively rumor is that RCI is looking to buy up or somehow affiliate a couple of sizable independent exchange companies such as Dial-an-Exchange and Interchange there, which would give them a huge leg up on Interval in terms of number of affiliated independent resorts. Of course, Trendwest will be leaving II for RCI, leaving Accor (APVC) and precious few others in the region flying the II banner.

We hear it is also probable that more heads will roll at Trendwest Asia Pacific either during or after the visit. Sales, marketing, and administrative personnel are reportedly leaving in droves, leaving Trendwest executives to seriously consider whether to issue announcements of departing employees as they happen or issue a larger weekly release.

One ex-Trendwester states that Cendant has ripped “the soul” from what was a great company and tours and sales are almost as down as morale. McConnell apparently wants to see what is going on for himself. Where does this leave Larry Gildersleeve, thought by many to be the catalyst of Trendwest Asia Pacific’s decline? In Olympia working on Trendwest’s fledgling fractional division, but apparently Larry works in an office without many co-workers. No one expects to see much of Franz Hanning, thought by many to be merely a caretaker until the inevitable merger of Fairfield/Trendwest/and Cendant timeshare (we think he will be more than a caretaker...). Fairfield continues to assert that such a merger will not happen, since the legal and other structures of Trendwest and Fairfield are so different as to make it nearly impossible.

Maybe Ken can explain to Hack how RCI Points doesn’t compete with the Cendant timeshare companies?

  • YOUR COMMENTS:
  • Sept. 28: --" As a longtime Trendwest employee here in Australia I'm shocked by what I see happening around me, many of my workmates who loved this company and gave their all, have left and many many more want to leave as soon as they can and that includes me. You're right it's happening in all areas of the company, we only get to hear about it through the grapevine. People are just fed up. How could the owners of this company let imcompetent, uncaring (except for themselves) individuals who call themselves directors and senior managers destroy such a good company.

I was here when everyone pulled together under good and caring leadership, now all we see is our colleagues left right & centre walking away with disgust. I've tried to speak to senior people in the company about this but it all falls on deaf ears, they just don't care about us, only themselves and covering their backsides. I think your comment about people leaving in droves is probably an understatement you only have to listen in on what's being discussed in the lunchroom to find out about who's next to leave."
  • Sept. 29: --" I am also an ex-long time Trendwest Employee. Left recently, but I can tell you, the reason behind everyone leaving is the new CEO, Barry Robinson! No other reason. When Cendant took over things went down-hill, but when Cyclone Barry came along… they hit rock bottom!!!!!"
