IN Europe with Simone

Amsterdam by Night

Fed up with cities by night? Then try Amsterdam for a change. Famous for the red light scene - and so different from the big metropoles like Paris and Berlin.

Dresscode: - nothing special, casual, a bit elegant but more on the legere side.

Holland is the most tolerant country in Europe ( the other exception are Denmark and Sweden). Here effectively nobody asks who you are and what you do. Even drugs can be bought at each Bar.

A label of the life-culture of this country are the curtains in the windows of the houses. They are always open, day and night, and absolutely nobody looks into your living room.

In apartment houses the stairs often go up on the outside and you pass along long terraces to reach your own apartment. The people just walk by, and the family sits or lies around in the lighted living rooms - nobody cares to look at each other.

And so Amsterdam presents its nightlifeopen, uncomplicated, more funny and with raffinesse and a bit "province"- than with lots of hidden fire. But it has its points - especially for youngsters and cool people.

Let's make a nightly  walk along the "Grachten". The striking feature of the city is its semi-circular structure of canals that run throughout the whole town. A nightly cruise with a sight-seeing boat will be our apéritiv.

Gliding along houseboats that people use as their home, we will enjoy a lot of genuine Holland. People actually live in these boats! They live there, not because they cannot afford a "real" house, but because it's such a charming way to live in the middle of the old city. They are often inhabited by artists, writers, intellectuals or just enthusiasts for this way of living. Like a movie passing by you will enjoy the boats' nightlife. Music, singing, chatting on deck. No problem- you can get even a nice invitation from a partying crowd on board, while your captain sails you through the most beautiful seventeenth century canals.

"What could be more beautiful than seeing illuminated Old Amsterdam from a luxury boat? Romance, candlelight and soft music are all yours, plus an assortment of Dutch cheeses and a choice of good wines." You feel well, easy-going.

Delft blue, tulips, a castle with a Queen, very pretty tiny houses along the streets. Blues in the air.

Bars, in small houses under big trees are filled up till the end- row on row stands the crowd, drinking a beer, chattting, smoke in your eyes. Talk with the person just standing on your feet- it's the best way to get in connection.

To warm up a bar with some pep ? Take a choice of your taste.

De Bananenbar
udezijds Achterburgwal 37 (6224670).
The owners of the Casa Rosso bring you another famous institution, De Bananenbar. Active audience participation is encouraged as bananas are transformed into erotic devices by the hostesses. Popular with tourists and stag parties. There's a semi-negotiable cover charge, but once you're in the drinks are on the house!
Open Mon-Sat 10pm-2am (3am weekends).

Casa Rosso                                                   Achterburgwal 106-108 (627 89 54).
Amsterdam's most famous and certainly largest night club, in the middle of the Red Light district. A clean and comfortable erotic theater which almost manages to create a family atmosphere; a must see for every tourist. Live shows every night, with audience participation.
Open daily until 3am. Admission f50.

Absolute Danny
Oudezijds Achterburgwal 78 (421 09 15).
You won't have any trouble finding a sex shop in this area, but Danny's deserves a special mention. One of the first shops run entirely by a woman, the atmosphere here is distinctly different from your basic shop. The orientation is towards fetish clothing, with a large variety of clothes, corsets and lingerie in rubber, pvc, see-through and leather. Accessories abound, such as jewelry, books, videos, erotic art and of course the traditional sex articles like the one and only Tarzan vibrator. According to the Dutch Playboy magazine this is one of the classiest erotic and fetish establishments in Holland, and it's definitely worth a try.
Open 11am-midnight.

Moulin Rouge
Moulin Rouge( a copy of Paris)
Oudezijds Achterburgwal 5-7 (625 13 78).
Erotic theater, in the tradition of its famous Paris counterpart; striptease and live shows.
Open daily 2pm-2am. Admission f35.

Oh!  Almost forgotten: the Sex- museum at the Danmark street

Three floors of everything you ever have seen or heard of specialties, toys,etc.- even from centuries ago - Opa & Oma had some fun too when they were young........

and around the corner near the redlight district let's enter a house for strip-tease and else. Wives are not forbidden to enter too- sure not in Amsterdam. A nice Bar at the first floor - second floor you may be offered a nice strip-tease show- boring? So take the way up - one floor higher a pretty woman and a (maybe her real husband) nice guy with muscles show you some live acts.... not bad. Still usual ? One floor more? Jes here you will be entertained by some woman and man dancing in costumes with raffiness, and using not usual toys. Warm, hot, hotter? It's quite stimulating.

Red Light District
And now Amsterdam-by-night visitors, the highlight and hotspot of Amsterdam: ° The redlight district

-- and, since Holland is Holland, wives and girls may enter too- maybe one of the girls in the window shows you a long nose or puts one middle finger up-----but don't care - just don't do it back!

What you may not  expect- most of the girls are very beautiful and will be pleased to see you enter their paradise - and then they sure will close their curtain specially 4u.

Richter (36 Op De Schaal Van)
Reguliersdwarsstraat 36 (626 15 73).
A small two-storied club catering mainly to thirty-somethings. The upper floor has a good view of the dancefloor below. The interior carries variations on the earthquake theme (36 on the Richter Scale), with cracked walls and ceilings and broken mirrors. Different musical styles with house, hip-hop, dance classics and garage sounds. Relatively relaxed door policy.
Open wed-sun 10pm-4am (5am weekends),
