Company Press Release: Westin Resort St. John
November 19, 1999
ST. JOHN, U.S. Virgin Islands -- The Westin Resort St. John suffered no damage whatsoever from Hurricane Lenny,
according to the resort's general manager Gregg Lundberg.
Despite media reports of extensive damage throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands, the island of St. John was largely
spared by the storm, according to Lundberg. The resort remained open and was at its full capacity of guests throughout
the event, he said. Guests included many from neighboring Caneel Bay Resort, which was shut down by the storm,
as well as a number of area boaters.
``The Westin Resort St. John staff undertook all precautions and preparations to ensure the safety and comfort
of our guests as we monitored the storm situation,'' Lundberg said. ``The hotel remains at its full capacity of
guests and our engineers have performed a full examination of the property and report no structural damage of any
kind.''
The resort's private beach was completely unharmed, Lundberg said, and the weather future looks bright. ``Hurricane
season is now past us, and the forecasters are telling us that after some leftover showers today, we should be
looking at a sunny weekend and no lasting effects from the storm,'' he said. The resort staff created a makeshift
restaurant in its ballroom and served guests there in addition to making and delivering 700 bag lunches directly
to guest's rooms to comply with curfew rules, Lundberg said.
The Resort staff is currently conducting a cleanup of the grounds to remove normal storm debris, Lundberg said.
The hotel will remain open and will offer its full range of services by Saturday morning. Guests will have full
food service by Thursday evening, he said, and both the Coccoloba and Beach Cafe restaurants will be open on Friday.
