MAMMOTH INVESTS $20 MILLION IN RESORT IMPROVEMENTS

Press Release

November 4, 1999
Mammoth Mountain, CA – California’s most popular mountain resort has invested $20 million in capital improvements this summer on Mammoth Mountain. As part of the five-year $130 million resort improvement campaign, a number of major projects are being completed including a new gondola system and lower gondola station, an additional high-speed quad, and expanded snowmaking.

The completion of the Panorama Gondola project signals the conclusion of the two-year project to renovate Mammoth’s gondola system. The top section of Panorama debuted in 1998, whisking skiers and boarders from Mid Chalet to Mammoth’s 11,053-foot peak in state of the art eight-passenger high-speed cabins. This year Mammoth unveils the lower section of Panorama, completing the lift that carries guests over 2,000-feet in under nine minutes. A new building, Panorama Station, has been constructed to house the base of the Lower Panorama Gondola. The 13,500 square foot building is located between the Main Lodge and the Mammoth Mountain Inn, adjacent to the bronze woolly statue. Woollywood, Mammoth Kids Sports Center, will take over the entire first floor of Panorama Station, while the second floor will host lift ticket sales and skier services. The location of Panorama Station allows easier access points for guests just starting their day and for parents delivering children to Woollywood.

Beginning skiers and snowboarders will get a quick lift from the Discovery Chair, an express quad that replaces Chairs 11 and 27. The addition of this high-speed detachable quad servicing the beginner terrain at the Main Lodge will help newcomers improve skills quickly by allowing more time on the slopes and less time on the lift.

Mammoth’s already extensive snowmaking network is getting a boost this year with an added 62 acres of coverage. The addition of snowmaking on Roller Coaster, Avalanche, Clover Leaf, School Yard, Little Bird, and Downhill on the east side of Mammoth Mountain will ensure early season openings at Canyon Lodge.

Mammoth’s Unbound Terrain Parks are expanding with two new halfpipes, a new park at Canyon Lodge, the continuation of the park on Roller Coaster West, and a new Super PipeDragon. The addition of the park at Canyon Lodge and the continuation of the Roller Coaster West park allows Mammoth to offer terrain features for all ages and abilities. The newest park and halfpipe will be located on School Yard and, as the name implies, will cater primarily to lower level riders. South Park, located on Roller Coaster West, was applauded last season by intermediate riders not quite ready for the enormity of the park at Main Lodge. The Super PipeDragon is a state-of-the-art halfpipe building machine that will enable the Unbound crew to sculpt the best halfpipes in the west! Continued improvements to our freeride terrain parks give skiers and snowboarders the time and space to spread their wings.

These major construction projects are just the beginning. Mammoth visitors can also expect to see minor modifications to the Mid Chalet building and Main Lodge dining facilities, slope renovation in preparation for future construction projects, and a sundeck at the Yodler Bar & Pub.
