Stephen Rushmore, president and Founder of HVS International, is pleased to announce that Jan deRoos, Cornell University
Associate Professor of Property-Asset Management, was recently elected by the University’s Board of Trustees as
the HVS International Professor of Hotel Finance and Real Estate. Rushmore, a 1967 graduate of the Cornell Hotel
School, established this professorship in the name of HVS International several years ago to further the study
of hotel finance and valuations. Professor James Eyster was the first HVS professor who held the chair until his
retirement.
“Professor Jan deRoos is my first choice to assume the HVS professorship,” remarked Rushmore. “His knowledge,
teaching skills, and scholarship exemplify the qualities espoused by HVS International.”
Professor deRoos is a three-time Cornell University graduate, holding a bachelor of science, master of science,
and doctorate degree. He teaches upper-level and graduate courses in real estate management, timeshare development
and operations, hospitality real estate finance, and properties development and planning. Recently, he co-authored
with Stephen Rushmore the Hospitality Valuation Software: Hotel Market Studies, Financial Projections & Valuations,
Second Edition.
Professor deRoos has consulted with Nikko Hotels, Loews Hotels, and others on valuation and market feasibility
projects. He has researched lodging and timeshare markets for HVS International, Cracker Barrel, and the American
Hotel & Lodging Association. His articles have been published in the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration
Quarterly, Real Estate Finance, and the International Journal of Hospitality Management. DeRoos’ professional
experience includes eight years with the Sheraton and Remington Hotel corporations.
