KILLINGTON, VT -- For the 41st consecutive season, this morning Killington Resort was the first resort to open
in the East for skiing and riding for the 2001-2002 season. Monday night, Killington snowmakers were stationed
at the helm of the most extensive snowmaking system in North America, preparing for Tuesday's opening on the Rime
trail in the Glades area off Killington Peak. Approximately 2-4 inches of natural snow from Monday's storm helped
the opening day cause as well.
``We're looking forward to another long, snow-filled season,'' said Allen Wilson, Killington president. ``A 30
percent increase in snowmaking capacity plus more than 315 inches of natural snowfall we had last season left some
lasting memories in our guests' minds about reliable snow surfaces at Killington-we hope to continue that momentum
this season.''
Killington traditionally sets the pace for early season skiing and riding in the East. Last year, with the addition
of water resources from Woodward Reservoir, located in nearby Plymouth, Vt., Killington was the first to open in
the East and continued to expand terrain while other resorts were simply trying to open for the season. By Thanksgiving,
Killington had 75 trails and 35 miles of terrain open for all ability levels, two to three times more than the
nearest competitor. Water from Woodward Reservoir is transferred through a seven-mile pipeline connection from
the reservoir to two existing snowmaking reservoirs at the resort. The two-year project is a $5 million investment
for the resort and was completed in October 2000. The snowmaking project allows Killington to keep surrounding
streams' flows to February median levels and still produce more snow mid-winter without having an impact on the
environment.
Terrain will be for upper intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. Guests will access terrain via a truck
ride to the Canyon Quad chairlift and then Glades Triple chairlift. Killington opens at 10 a.m. and tickets are
$25/person. Early season skiing and riding is done on a changing operating schedule. Guests are encouraged to call
