Buy a piece of paradise

Timeshare, say its fans, is a way for you to own a slice of luxury. At least a quarter of a million Canadian families have done just that

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Timeshare has always been a bit of a dirty word, especially among the wealthy who can afford to buy a second home outright, rather than just part of one.

"They don't even call it timeshare any more, it's vacation ownership," says Mort Ison, the 67-year-old owner of two Toronto Honda dealerships. He also happens to have bought into the vacation ownership dream, buying four weeks of every year in one of the most luxurious vacation ownership properties in the world, Four Seasons in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"I was never, ever in favour of timeshare," says Mr. Ison. But the Four Seasons name got his attention. The chain jumped into the vacation ownership business four years ago, bringing its reputation for luxury and pampering with it.
