Shell's Kona Resort Receives National Design Award

Press Release

KONA, HI -- Shell Vacations was recently named a national award winner in the resort development industry for its $4 million interior refurbishment project of the Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village in Kona, Hawaii.

Competing with dozens of resorts from around the world, the Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village was named the silver winner in the category of Interior Design at the American Resort Development Association's (ARDA) annual conference of vacation ownership developers, held recently in Orlando, Florida. Working in concert with resort owner Shell Vacations, Pamela Temples Interiors was responsible for the year-long refurbishment project.

Located in Kona on the Big Island, the resort overlooks the par 72 Kona Country Club golf course and features ocean views. It is six miles from Kona Village, with its specialty shops and fine dining. Additional amenities include multiple swimming pools with adjacent hot tubs.

According to Chris Breed resort general manager, "Every single item in each unit has been completely replaced or refurbished. This includes carpeting, wall and window coverings, appliances and all furnishings. Each unit is fully equipped for vacation enjoyment and includes full kitchens and washers and dryers."

Shell Vacations is one of the nation's largest independent vacation ownership developers, headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois. Shell purchased the resort in 1999 and spent a year completely refurbishing the 73 vacation ownership units of the total 141 units of the project.

Added Jeffrey P. Server, Senior Vice President of Development/Acquisition for Shell Vacations, "The unusual element to this project was the fact that many of the units had not been occupied for several years. This required much more in the way of cosmetic renovation than just the addition of new furnishings."

Shell Vacations and Greater Pacific Limited Partnership recently announced a joint venture agreement calling for the development of an additional 150-200 two bedroom two bath vacation units on the adjoining land.

Based in Honolulu, Greater Pacific will contribute prime property with both ocean front and golf course views and a 14-court tennis center to the venture and Shell Vacations will develop, market and sell the vacation ownership units.

Sales of the Shell Vacations Club point-based program have been underway at the resort since last November. The company has also developed Kona Coast Resort Phases I and II, Paniolo Greens Resort, and the Kauai Coast Resort at the Beachboy in Kauai, as well as a dozen other resorts in Hawaii, California, Arizona and Canada.
