The Bay Club Ownership Resort Wins Second Place in Cancer Fundraiser

July 2, 2001
WAIKOLOA, HI -- The 7th annual American Cancer Society "Relay For Life" was once again a hub of activity on the Kona coast. Over 57 teams participated in the all night walking fundraiser, with a total of over $120,000 raised.

"This event celebrates cancer survivorship and remembers people who have passed away," Bay Club Marketing Director Shari West said. "It is something that we are very proud to be involved with every year."

The Bay Club team won 2nd place honors for the amount they raised (over $8,500) as well as 2nd place in the category of education.

Relay For Life began in 1985 when Dr. Gordon Klatt, a Tacoma, Washington surgeon and an American Cancer Society volunteer, ran and walked on a local track for 24 hours, traveling 81 miles. He put together a relay event that raises more than $2 million each year to fight cancer.

A fun-filled, overnight event, Relay For Life mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer. On the day of the event, teams of people gather at school or community football fields, fairgrounds or parks and take turns walking, jogging or running laps. Each team is asked to keep at least one representative of their team on the track at all times.

The Bay Club at Waikoloa Beach Resort is one of Hawaii's premiere timeshare resorts. Located along the exclusive south Kohala coast on the Big Island of Hawaii, it is an RCI-affiliated Gold Crown Resort that is within strolling distance to championship golf courses and the white sands of the Anaeho'omalu Bay.

In 1994, Grand Ownership Resorts, Ltd. of Lahaina, Hawaii, joined forces with the Nikken Corporation of Honolulu to convert the 172-unit Bay Club at Waikoloa Beach Resort to a vacation ownership property. Nikken is a wholly owned subsidiary of the AZEL Corporation, Limited, of Tokyo, Japan, a publicly traded company with over $500 million in annual sales.

The company will soon begin construction on Phase Two of the resort, which will consist of 114 units, a Clubhouse and Service building. Other amenities will include a swimming pool and spa. The Front Desk, Owner Services, and the General Manager will operate out of the new Clubhouse, which will also become the central check in/out area for guests of both Phase One and Two. Guests of Phase One and Two may visit and use any of the leisure facilities on the grounds.

Along with Phase Two plans are moving forward for construction of a new development on ten acres of oceanfront land that parent company Nikken Corporation purchased in February of 2000. The Beach Club will be the first of its kind on The Big Island. The facility will offer a full service spa. Outdoor amenities will include a swimming pool, keiki pool and spa.
