Not much has changed with Lionshead since the council’s declaration nearly six year ago.
It’s still Vail’s ugly red-headed stepchild that is not new, charming, pretty or as successful as it needs to be.
Today the Vail Town Council will begin deliberations on what part of the renewal and redevelopment of Lionshed
will be publicly funded and what will be private. The decision is part of the focus of a $500,000 town master plan,
adopted in 1998, to encourage redevelopment and new development of the Lionshead area that was built in 1972. This
second village of Vail, one-half mile west of Vail Village, is suspected in part of dragging down the fortunes
of Vail, a resort town in the midst of reinventing itself. Skier number growth industry-wide has flattened to 1
to 2 percent, the master plan said, making increased competition for skiers worldwide. That competition is driving
the reinvestment and redevelopment of Lionshead.
