DAYTONA BEACH -- It's old and damaged, but the city wants to buy the historic Main Street Pier.
The easternmost portion of the pier was lost in 1999 to the fury of Hurricane Floyd in a moment caught on video
and broadcast around the world. But the structure survives as a popular tourist destination and is the focus of
plans for a proposed $300 million redevelopment of the Boardwalk area.
City commissioners plan to consider applying for a $3 million grant from the Florida Communities Trust to buy the
pier at Wednesday's commission meeting at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 301 S. Ridgewood Ave. The trust is a state program
that helps local governments buy property for preservation.
Daytona Beach is also trying to get another $3 million to match the state grant from a U.S. Housing and Urban Development
program for economic development.
