ST. LOUIS, MO -- New York's legendary Hotel Carlyle is being sold by the partnership that has owned it for more than 30 years to Maritz, Wolff & Co.

Upon closing of the sale, The Carlyle will be operated by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, the premier manager of ultra-luxury hotels throughout the world. Rosewood is owned in a joint partnership by Maritz, Wolff & Co. and the Rosewood Corporation.

``Rosewood and Maritz, Wolff & Co. have the deepest respect for the legacy of The Carlyle,'' said Philip Maritz, President of Maritz, Wolff & Co. and Chairman of Rosewood. ``No major changes are planned for this landmark. We will continue to enhance the hotel and the service as the current owners have done.''

Norman Peck, Managing Partner for the current ownership group, said, ``We are proud that Rosewood has selected The Carlyle as its flagship New York hotel. The Carlyle is one of New York's great institutions. My partners and I are confident that the new owners share our original goal of creating and maintaining one of the world's great hotels.''

Maritz said that Dan Camp, who has served as president of The Carlyle since 1989 will remain in that capacity. ``The Carlyle will be the quintessential example of Rosewood's philosophy of operating hotels that have a unique sense of place®,'' said Maritz. ``This hotel, with all its history, just says 'New York.'''

In 1970, Peck and his partners, Peter J. Sharp and Jerome Greene, converted The Carlyle, which opened in the 1920s, into a cooperative with both resident-owned and transient hotel units.

Today, of the hotel's 249 keys, 180 are luxury guestrooms and suites owned by the selling group.

The decision to sell the hotel was motivated by the deaths of Mr. Sharp in 1992 and Mr. Greene in 1999.

Maritz, Wolff & Co., a private investment firm based in St. Louis and Los Angeles (with financial backing from SPO Partners & Co.), is one of the world's largest owners of luxury lodging properties. Among its $2 billion portfolio comprising 18 properties are The Four Seasons Nevis, Little Dix Bay Hotel in the British Virgin Islands and The Four Seasons Toronto.

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, manages properties on five continents worldwide including The Lanesborough in London, The Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, Badrutt's Palace in St. Moritz, Switzerland, Hotel Seiyo Ginza in Tokyo, Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Los Cabos, Mexico. Each Rosewood property is preeminent in its region and artfully designed with local inspiration to create a distinctive sense of place®.
