Press Release: Women Traveling Together
January 31, 2001
ANNAPOLIS, MD -- 80 percent of women who travel without a husband or male companion, end up traveling alone. Women
who are single, divorced, or widowed have little choice but to travel alone when friends and family are unavailable.
A recent study of all travelers joining tours sponsored by ``Women Traveling Together'' during 2000 found that
only 20% of the women traveled with a friend or family member. On average, groups of 20 would include 16 solo travelers.
Women who travel alone seek out all-women groups such as Women Traveling Together because the tours are designed
specifically to suit their interests. All-women groups also give women the chance to meet other solo travelers
from across the US (1-800-795-7135). See http://www.women-traveling.com.
``Women want to travel, but without a husband as a built-in travel partner, many women have little choice but to
stay home or travel alone,'' says Debra Asberry, president of Women Traveling Together. ``I constantly reassure
women who are considering a tour with us that they will not be the only solo traveler. Women do not realize how
common their situation is.''
Solo travelers do not have to pay for a single room if they take advantage of the roomshare program offered by
Women Traveling Together. Most solo travelers request to share a room with another traveler, and find it is a good
experience. Often, women who room together on one trip will request each other as roommates on subsequent tours.
``Without a doubt, more single women would travel if they realized their situation is not unique, and knew travel
opportunities such as Women Traveling Together exist,'' says Asberry. ``We are the perfect solution for women who
want to travel, but don't like the idea of traveling alone.''
Women Traveling Together offers 25 custom designed tours each year, with destinations in the US and abroad. Upcoming
trips include England's Royal Castles and Gardens, Tall Ship Sailing in the Caribbean, an Exploration of Australia,
and the Albuquerque Balloon Festival with a side-trip to Santa Fe, just to name a few. All of the itineraries for
Women Traveling Together can be seen at http://www.women-traveling.com
