Press Release
January 25, 2001
DALLAS, TX -- Thousand Trails, Inc. (AMEX:TRV), one of the nation's largest owners and operators of membership-based
campgrounds, yesterday announced that its management services subsidiary has been awarded contracts in Colorado
and Washington that will increase the number of campgrounds managed by approximately 30%.
Beginning this year, Thousand Trails Management Services, Inc. (``Trails Management''), a wholly owned subsidiary
of Thousand Trails, will manage the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forest and the White River National Forest
in Colorado for the U.S. Forest Service and will also manage the Lewis River Complex in Washington for PacifiCorp,
an Oregon-based utility company. The Colorado properties include 109 campgrounds and 2,437 campsites, while the
Washington property includes five campgrounds and 277 campsites.
Last year, Trails Management managed 169 public campgrounds, containing 3,850 campsites, for the U.S. Forest Service.
Under its management contracts, Trails Management incurs the expenses of operating the campgrounds and receives
the related revenues, net of a fee paid to the U.S. Forest Service. In the year ended June 30, 2000, Trails Management
had revenues of $2.5 million. Guests spent about 300,000 nights at campgrounds managed by Trails Management last
year.
``We're excited about the growth at Trails Management,'' said Bill Shaw, President and CEO of Thousand Trails.
``Trails Management's revenues have almost doubled since 1998, and we expect further revenue growth with the addition
of these new contracts. Our presence in Colorado increases dramatically with these awards. We will be managing
virtually every U.S. Forest Service property in the northern half of Colorado.''
Prior to these awards, Trails Management had seven campgrounds and 250 campsites under contract in Colorado. It
will now have 109 campgrounds and 2,437 campsites under contract there.
Founded in 1969 to provide a secure, friendly, and affordable camping experience, Thousand Trails today offers
a premium outdoors destination to 119,000 members at 63 membership-based camping preserves located in 17 states
and British Columbia, Canada. Thousand Trails also provides a reciprocal use program for members of approximately
300 recreational facilities and manages 241 public campgrounds for the U.S. Forest Service and other entities.
