Press Release: Oracle Corporation
September 11, 2001
REDWOOD SHORES, CA -- (http://www.oracle.com/tellmemore/?854695
) Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL), the largest provider of software for e-business, yesterday announced that it is
developing and hosting new wireless travel information services for Fodors.com, the leading full-service online
travel information provider. Hosted by Oracle using the wireless capabilities of the Oracle9i Application Server,
Fodors.com's first wireless service launched in April 2001, providing global travelers with wire-free access to
vital information found on its award-winning web site. With its Oracle® solution, Fodors.com is quickly delivering
world-class wireless services, while avoiding the complexity of developing and hosting services on its own, enabling
the company to reduce technological complexity, time-to-market and information technology (IT) costs.
The Oracle solution also provides a platform for Fodors.com's future wireless applications. By utilizing the wireless
functionality of Oracle9i Application Server and hosting its services through Oracle, Fodors.com can easily deliver
unique travel services that tie together content and data from multiple sources. For example, Fodors.com now provides
wireless services through Sprint PCS that allow travelers to evaluate restaurants and hotels. Fodors.com has teamed
with Sprint PCS to provide users with the ability to retrieve Fodors.com's up-to-date reviews and information to
more than 227 destinations worldwide via Sprint PCS phones.
``Oracle's hosted services based on Oracle9i Application Server provide Fodors.com with a strong foundation for
future wireless growth,'' said Brent Peich, vice president and general manager for Fodors.com. ``By working with
Oracle to develop and host our new wireless applications, we can leverage Oracle's in-depth wireless expertise
to quickly deploy new services tailored specifically to the needs of our users.''
Fodors.com is basing its wireless services on Oracle's proven, scalable and secure software, including the Oracle9i
Database and Oracle9i Application Server. Fodors.com selected Oracle to develop and host its new wireless initiatives
based on Oracle's cost-effectiveness, ability to easily integrate with other services and data sources and speed
in bringing new services to market. Development time for the initial Fodors.com service was only two months.
``Travel and Internet-based wireless services simply go hand in hand,'' said Denise Lahey, chief executive officer
for OracleMobile, the mobile products and services division of Oracle. ``By delivering rich, personalized content
and services to its users, no matter where they are, Fodors.com strengthens its position as a leading provider
of online travel information and resources. Oracle gives Fodors.com a best-in-class foundation for current and
future wireless initiatives, while helping reduce complexity, time-to-market and costs.''
