BATON ROUGE, La. -- The bankrupt Harrah's New Orleans Casino took another step Tuesday toward remaining open when
a key legislative committee approved a plan that would cut in half the property's $100 million annual tax bill.
The Louisiana Senate's Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee voted 5-4 to recommend that the Senate adopt the measure.
"We came out with a favorable recommendation, and I thought this would be our toughest test," said bill
co-sponsor, state Sen. Ken Hollis, R-Metarie. "The momentum is on the side of keeping the casino's 3,000 jobs,
and I feel as good about the bill's prospects as I've ever felt."
