Press Release: Rosewood Hotels & Resorts
November 15, 2000
DALLAS, TX -- Rosewood Hotels & Resorts announced yesterday it has reached an agreement with Canouan Resorts
Development Ltd. (CRD) to manage its ultra-luxury resort, Carenage Bay, on picturesque Canouan Island, St. Vincent
and the Grenadines, W.I.
Spread across more than 200 acres on the remote island in the Eastern Caribbean, 30 miles south of St. Vincent,
and adjacent to Mustique, this $160 million luxury resort opened about a year ago. Designed by renowned Italian
architects Luigi Vietti and Antonio Ferrari, the resort is European-styled with tropical and Mediterranean accents,
evident in the colorful designs of the 155 villa suites -- all overlooking the sea. Against a spectacular white
sand beach backdrop, Carenage features a magnificent par-72, 18-tee, 13-green, golf course, which is currently
being extended to a full 18-hole championship course, a deluxe European casino, several private yachts, tennis,
sports and scuba diving, a health and fitness center with spa facilities, one of the Caribbean's largest freshwater
pools, four restaurants, and bars. CRD will continue to develop the land it owns adjacent to the resort for the
construction and sale of luxurious, private villas.
``Carenage Bay is a perfect complement to our diverse and striking collection of resorts in the Caribbean,'' said
Jim Brown, president and chief operating officer, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. ``With our Martineau Bay property
on Vieques set to open shortly, L'Avanbleu under construction on St. Lucia, and our two existing world-renowned
resorts, Little Dix Bay and Caneel Bay, the Caribbean remains a popular location for Rosewood's clientele. We are
committed to having a significant presence in this region. For a company that prides itself on its sensitivity
both architecturally and humanistically to local environments, remote Caribbean enclaves are particularly appealing.''
``We know Rosewood's impeccable reputation as an operator of ultra-luxury resorts and as a company that designs
resorts thoughtfully with an eye not only to guests' desires, but also to the destination and the preservation
of its natural beauty and culture. We built Carenage Bay with this in mind, and we believe we have chosen a true
partner in style and spirit with like-minded goals and philosophies,'' said Swiss investment banker, Antonio Saladino,
CRD's chairman.
Carenage Bay will commence operations under Rosewood's management on November 12, 2000. In addition to spacious
suites and villas, all with private terraces and many with seaside views, all rooms feature custom-made linens
and fabrics, original works of art by renowned Italian artist Constanzo Rovati, all depicting objects found on
Canouan Island. Guest amenities will include twice-daily maid service, daily laundry, mini-bar refrigerators, concierge
service, and dual-line phones with Internet connection capabilities.
Canouan Island, one of the many Grenadine islands and cays that comprise the country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines,
is serviced through five gateways including Barbados, Grenada, Martinique, St. Lucia and St. Vincent.
