Press Release: Delta Hotels
June 27, 2000
TORONTO -- Delta Hotels announced yesterday that it has assumed the management contract for the newly named "Delta
Winnipeg" (formerly the Crowne Plaza in Winnipeg, Manitoba), connected to the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
"We are delighted to return to the Winnipeg market," says John Johnston, President, Delta Hotels. "Delta
Hotels has a long history with the city of Winnipeg. We previously enjoyed success in this market for 15 years,
and now we are excited to return with such a well-established property."
To further strengthen its position in the marketplace, the Delta Winnipeg will undergo a $12-million capital renovation
plan beginning late fall to upgrade existing facilities. The Delta Winnipeg, owned by Legacy Hotels Real Estate
Investment Trust, is currently the largest hotel of its class in the downtown core. The hotel features 402 rooms
and 18,000 square feet of meeting space, two restaurants, a fitness centre with indoor and outdoor pool, as well
as a whirlpool and sauna. Located across from the city's largest shopping complex and with convenient access to
the Convention Centre, the hotel is the perfect venue for individual business travellers as well as meeting and
convention visitors.
According to Johnston, the Delta Winnipeg is an ideal fit for Delta Hotels. "Over the past few years, we have
strengthened our portfolio - renovating and upgrading existing properties, entering into the resort market and
adding new hotels in key markets," explains Johnston. "The Delta Winnipeg is a crucial link for us, re-establishing
our presence in a vital market and ensuring a strong Delta presence in every major city centre across Canada."
Delta also plans to capture some Winnipeg heritage in its marketing efforts. The new icon used in advertising and
collateral materials for the Delta Winnipeg will be the renowned Golden Boy, a four metre gold statue on the Legislative
Building with one hand holding the torch of progress to the north and the other cradling the symbolic sheaf of
wheat.
Delta Hotels is the largest first class hotel company in Canada, operating over 30 hotels from Vancouver to St.
Johns. Delta's diverse portfolio of city-centre, airport and resort properties cater to business and leisure travellers.
Headquartered in Toronto, Delta Hotels is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Hotels & Resorts Inc.
