Rs. 1.5 crore tourist complex at Ponmudi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 3. A tourist complex with modern facilities will be constructed at the idyllic hill resort of Ponmudi at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crore by the Department of Tourism with central assistance.

The complex, comprising of 18 double rooms with balconies and restaurant, is to be constructed by the Central Public Works Department in the premises of the Government Guest House.

At present, the tourists had to depend on the guest house for food and accommodation. Due to non-availability of adequate accommodation, food and security at the resort, the tourists who reach during day time are forced to return before sun set.

The complex is expected to attract more tourists to the hill destination, which is hardly two hours drive from the capital, and solve the problems of accommodation, official sources said.

The department has also constructed a Rs. 10 lakh Tourist Information Centre adjacent to the Guest House to provide all information relating to Kerala Tourism to the tourists. The centre has been constructed by the State PWD wing.

The Tourism Minister, Mr. E. Chandrasekharan Nair, will lay the foundation stone for the proposed tourist complex and inaugurate the information centre at a function to be organised at Ponmudi on June 5. Mr. Pirappancode Murali, MLA, will preside over and Mr. Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP, will be the chief guest.
