Renowned Spa to Open in Fall 2001 at Flagship Wyndham Luxury Resort
Company Press Release
July 14, 2000
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)---- Wyndham International, Inc. (NYSE:WYN) announced plans to open a new door -- a new
Golden Door® Spa that is -- at The Boulders® Resort, the exclusive desert hideaway and Wyndham Luxury Resorts'
flagship property in Carefree, Ariz.
The 33,000 square-foot spa will wrap around the northside of the base of the resort's signature boulder monument
and overlook the sprawling grounds of the property. It is slated for a September 2001 opening.
``We're thrilled to introduce Golden Door at The Boulders, our third resort spa location. The marriage between
one of America's premiere resorts and the world's preeminent spa is a perfect match. Through this expansion, we've
been very careful to maintain the quality and integrity that only Golden Door defines,'' said Fred Kleisner, president
and chief executive officer of Wyndham International. The other two Golden Door resort properties include the Golden
Door Spa at Las Casitas Village in Las Croabas, Puerto Rico and the Wyndham Peaks Resort & Golden Door Spa
in Telluride, Colo.
The Golden Door at The Boulders Resort will feature 25 treatment spaces, a labyrinth (meditative maze), 2,000 square-foot
fitness center with a wide array of Cybex equipment, outdoor patios and panoramic views. The spa will be designed
with West and East Wings. The West Wing will house the check-in area, fitness center, and mind/body and movement
studios -- all with sweeping views of either awe-inspiring boulder piles or Black Mountain in the distance. The
East Wing will have a more contemplative setting with meditation areas, treatment spaces (each with four choices
of music), hydrotherapy, a full-service salon, elaborate locker rooms, a circular tea room and an interior rock
and sand garden.
The facility will boast an area specially dedicated to Watsu (underwater treatment designed to bring partakers
``back to the womb''); two Vichy treatment rooms (with heated, tiled floors and Swiss showers); one couples suite
(with private whirlpool, terrace and outdoor fireplace); and one ``Ultimate Spa Suite'' (700 square-feet with private
access, steam showers, private patio, dataport and television).
``Wyndham International's primary objective is to provide the highest quality spa facilities -- whether it's a
resort spa, destination spa or smaller day spa. As the trend to rejuvenate both mind and body becomes increasingly
more spa-oriented, we are happy to offer this exceptional product to our guests,'' said Kleisner.
Wimberly, Alison, Tong & Goo, the international architectural firm, will work in conjunction with Omikron,
the interior design firm, to create a facility that will incorporate elements of feng shui and the Zen-like ambiance
of the original Golden Door Spa (in Escondido, Calif.), while staying true to the natural environs of The Boulders.
Bamboo accents, hand-sculptured water fountains, aromatic candles and Japanese gardens will reflect the Golden
Door's Asian influences, while artwork by local artisans, cool desert coloring and indigenous plantings will pay
homage to the Southwest.
The Boulders Resort features 160 guest casitas and 48 one-, two- and three-bedroom villas, five restaurants and
lounges, two championship Jay Morrish-designed golf courses, eight plexi-cushioned tennis courts and a full-service
spa and fitness center. The resort has won numerous awards, including selection by Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report
as ``best American resort'' for 13 consecutive years and the coveted AAA Five Diamond Award. Other active pursuits
in the area include rock climbing, soaring, hot air ballooning and desert jeep tours.
