Press Release
Re-opens as a five-star resort
July 4, 2000 - Built ten years ago, the hotel marked the start of the group’s international activities, which now
involve a presence in ten countries around the world
Following a complete renovation, the Riu Taíno has moved up from four to five stars, still on an all-inclusive
basis, with its re-opening in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.
This 360-room hotel, on Punta Cana's sea-front, was opened only in 1991 and was the first of the RIU group's hotels
outside Spain.
There are six others in the Dominican Republic. In Punta Cana itself, there are four others - the Riu Naiboa, Riu
Melao, Riu Palace Macao and, two years' ago, the Club-Hotel Riu Bambú. In the Puerto Plata area, there
are two more - the Riu Merengue and the Club-Hotel Riu Mambo. Over the past few years, several of the hotels have
received major international awards.
Overall in the Dominican Republic, the RIU group offers over 2,800 rooms, and a total of 5,660 beds. All the establishments
are owned by the group, and all operate on an all-inclusive basis. Apart from the Riu Naiboa and the Riu Melao,
all are 5-star hotels.
The RIU hotels practice is the renovation and complete modernisation of its establishments at least once every
ten years, in order to maintain the quality and comfort of their facilities, as well as to adapt them to the changing
tastes and needs of their clients.
In the case of Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, the siting of the establishments, the comfort of their facilities,
the wide range of food, the variety of sports on offer and, especially, the friendly service offered by staff have
made the areas amongst the most popular for RIU clients.
Following its international start-up in the Dominican Republic in 1991, the group expanded to include Cuba, Florida,
Mexico, Portugal, Tunisia, Morocco, Bulgaria and Cyprus. The company currently controls 87 hotels with 23,000
rooms, and employs 10,500 people.
