BIG BEAR LAKE, CA -- Snow came early this year to Big Bear Lake as Bear Mountain opened for the 2003/2004 winter
ski season on Friday, Nov. 7, 2003.
Big Bear residents evacuated on Tuesday, Oct. 28, due to wildfires that hit Lake Arrowhead, 25 miles away. The
fires were controlled before they reached Big Bear Lake and are now 100% contained. Residents have now returned
to their homes, and businesses are fully operational.
Big Bear Lake lodging representatives expect high occupancy during the Thanksgiving and Holiday seasons. Such popular
Big Bear Lake hotels as Northwoods Resort and Conference Center expect hotel occupancy to be consistent with last
year. Special events for Washington Mutual, AFLAC, and other business and social groups are slated to continue
as planned at Northwoods.
The Club at Big Bear Village, a new development of high-end fractional properties, is continuing to receive inquiries
about fractional ownership opportunities.
"There is still a high interest level in the mountains," said Cheryl Shipe, General Manager of The Club.
"The phones are ringing, and I'm receiving inquiries from people requesting information."
According to local Coldwell Banker realtor Tyler Wood, the fires have not affected real estate sales, and forecasts
for the rest of the year are optimistic.
