Sybase Industry Warehouse Studio Selected by Global Card Services to Boost Market Analytical Capabilities for Merchant Customers

Sybase IWS joins installed base of Sybase technology at Global Card Services to extract value from current and historical transaction data

Press Release: Sybase, Inc.
June 25, 2003
DUBLIN, CA -- Sybase (NYSE: SY) Inc., a leading enterprise integration company, yesterday announced that Sybase Industry Warehouse Studio(TM) (IWS) for Finance has been selected by Global Card Services (GCS) to serve as the blueprint for the creation of new value-added services for GCS merchant customers. GCS provides payment gateways to facilitate credit card processing; systems to automate retrieval and charge backs; and management services to major hospitality companies across the world such as hotel operators, rental car companies, cruise lines, and timeshares. IWS for Financial Services includes pre-built infrastructures for "jump starting" the development of enterprise analytic applications for credit card, capital markets and banking organizations, resulting in better understanding of customer behaviors through the efficient transformation of enterprise data into economic value.

"Sybase Industry Warehouse Studio will allow us to do more with our data, for the direct benefit of our merchant customers in the hospitality industry," said Mark A. Silverman, president and chief executive officer of Global Card Services. "Working with Sybase, we expect to extract business intelligence for our customers from their existing data warehouses to serve as the foundation for new products and services for these customers, to assist them in such areas as campaign analysis, spending pattern analysis and promotional research."

At Global Card Services, Sybase Industry Warehouse Studio joins an existing installed base of Sybase technology that supports GCS both in real- time credit card transaction processing as well as in data warehouse applications to access historical transaction data for charge dispute resolution and enhanced customer service. "The Sybase applications we are running typically require less hardware than competing solutions from companies like Oracle, and they are among the most flexible available, in terms of their support for the multiple operating systems we are required to support, including UNIX, Linux, Windows 2000 and Tru64," continued Silverman. "As we support a mix of transaction environments for our merchant customers, Sybase Enterprise Application Server on Linux provides the ability as an application server to authenticate access and manage security tightly, which is crucial in an open Internet environment. The combination of Sybase Adaptive Server® Enterprise as our database for current transaction data, and Sybase IQ(TM) as our primary data warehouse gives us the speed and performance we need to process transactions and resolve merchant issues with the prompt turnaround our customers demand."

Global Card Services is also in the process of developing a hosted turn- key system, conforming to Visa's EasyPay(TM) criteria, to facilitate credit card payments to healthcare organizations. The system, also based upon Sybase technology, will be tested during the month of July in anticipation of a formal launch later in the year.

"Global Card Services is in the vanguard of organizations seeking innovative ways to extract market value from terabytes of stored enterprise data," said Roger Travis, senior director of solution sales, Sybase Business Intelligence Division. "In the current economic climate, merchants want more value and deeper customer knowledge from their credit card and other related data. We are pleased that GCS has selected Sybase Industry Warehouse Studio to assist them in creating more value from their extensive reserves of data."
