Stein Eriksen Lodge Named Recipient of Prestigious AAA Five Diamond Award

First Utah Lodging Property to Be Recognized

Press Release: Stein Eriksen Lodge
November 19, 2002
DEER VALLEY, PARK CITY, UT -- Stein Eriksen Lodge was honored last night with the prestigious AAA Five Diamond Award for 2003 at a ceremony in San Francisco.

AAA is considered one of the premier lodging and restaurant rating services. To receive the Five Diamond award, a hotel must represent the ultimate in world-class service and facilities. It is estimated that only 0.25 percent of lodging properties evaluated by AAA receive this highest ranking. For 2002 only 60 lodging properties of an estimated 30,000 properties evaluated by AAA received this honor.

For Stein Eriksen Lodge, the receipt of the Five Diamond award represents the successful culmination of a five-year plan. The Lodge has long been noted for its exceptional hospitality and gracious service. But, the Lodge's owners had higher aspirations.

"In 1997, our board of directors and management team established the goal of making Stein Eriksen Lodge a Five Diamond property," said Russ Olsen, general manager. "The fastidious execution of this plan by the entire staff resulted in our attaining this remarkable distinction. The award doesn't belong to the Lodge. It belongs to the staff. They are the diamonds."

Stein Eriksen Lodge is the first and only Utah lodging property to receive AAA's highest honor. And, only one other ski resort property presently holds the Five Diamond rating. "With this honor, Stein Eriksen Lodge joins a very exclusive group of properties where guests know they will receive consistently exceptional service," said Olsen.

The recent completion of a $50 million expansion and remodeling plan including the addition of the Olympic Conference Center, a 4,300-square-foot full service spa, and a slope-side ski locker room were all part of the quest to receive the Five Diamond award.

In addition to these physical improvements, Stein Eriksen Lodge carefully evaluated and upgraded its service level to meet the AAA Five Diamond criteria. Staff members have been trained to greet guests by name after their first introduction and to avoid saying no to any guest request. For instance, if a guest asks for something not carried by the Lodge, the staff member will offer to go outside the property to fill that request. If a guest asks for directions around the property, they are personally escorted to that location. The staff must consistently anticipate guests' needs and demonstrate that all associates are empowered by management to resolve guest issues immediately.

About The AAA Ratings

To be considered for AAA rating and approval, lodging and restaurants must undergo a thorough evaluation by one of AAA's 65 full-time, trained, professional tourism editors. Five Diamond establishments go through a more extensive review. More than 30,000 lodging properties will be listed in the 2003 AAA TourBook guides, and only one-quarter of one percent receive a AAA Five Diamond rating.
