Press Release: Nu-Salya Chalet
September 26, 2002
SQUAMISH, BC -- Nu-Salya Chalet has just been awarded another half star, making it the only Five Star B&B in
the Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler region and one of only a handful of Five Star hotels, inns and B&Bs in
Canada.
The final half-star, awarded in August by BC Tourism's Certified Rating Advisors, means Nu-Salya meets the national
standards of exceptional properties which are among the best in Canada.
It began in 1997 when Bill and Sue McComish moved from downtown Toronto to settle between Vancouver's urban excitement
and Whistler's ski runs.
"We had travelled throughout Europe and were always attracted to beautiful buildings by master craftsmen,"
Bill McComish says. "Around B.C. I was also drawn to the architecture of log homes and my experience as a
carpenter and building contractor in Toronto gave me the inspiration to build a beautiful West Coast home."
So they built their dream home, called it Nu-Salya (My Vision in Salish) and decided to share it with the world.
The chalet has attracted many accolades.
In the June Forbes Travel, Nu-Salya was the only Canadian B&B selected for the top 12.
Penguin Publishing chose Nu-Salya for the front cover of the Canadian Bed and Breakfast Guide 2002/03.
In May 2000, it was chosen as the site for a movie production featuring actress Heather Graham.
The upscale chalet, with three private guest rooms and decorations of native art the McComishes have collected
from all over the continent, has been written up in the Vancouver Sun and Province.
And with all the raves Nu-Salya has been receiving, Bill McComish says the fifth star marks their proudest moment.
"These are not awarded lightly, and there are very few Five Star B&Bs in all of Canada so we are very
proud of this accomplishment," he says.
Many people think of B&Bs as simple, homey places and, while this is true of many, McComish says he's been
surprised to note the increasing popularity of upscale B&Bs.
To keep up with this trend, he and his wife check out Five Star hotels and inns on any of their travels around
North America to see what those facilities have to offer and how Nu-Salya can meet and exceed those standards.
What's next in store for the McComishes?
"For Nu-Salya to be the best known small B&B in B.C." McComish says. And at the rate things are going,
that's a dream that shouldn't take too long to come true.
