Press Release: RIU Hotels & Resorts
October 18, 2002
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC -- Riu Palace Mexico, a 5-star establishment belonging to the RIU hotel chain in Playa del Carmen
(Mexico), was voted "best 'all inclusive' hotel of all destinations" by the American tour operator Apple
Vacations.
The tour operator has also given the establishment an extraordinary award: the 6-star Golden Award.
Apple prizes are awarded according to customer votes on return flights to their own country after a stay abroad.
In 2002 Apple customers opted for RIU's Caribbean establishments. As a result, the hotels Riu Yucatan and Riu Playacar,
on the Mexican Mayan Riviera, and the Riu Tropical Bay in Negril, (Jamaica), have earned themselves 5-star Golden
Awards.
4-star "Gold Awards" have gone to the Riu Taíno in Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) and the ClubHotel
Riu Tequila in Mexico.
This year's Apple prize-giving ceremony was held in the US city of Chicago. The results confirm the effective penetration
of the RIU brand into the American market, where the number of guests who come back for return visits is growing
continuously.
The RIU Hotels & Resorts (www.riu.com) chain began its process of internationalisation in 1991 in the Dominican
Republic. It currently has 96 hotels in 10 countries and 13,000 employees.
