Cancun to Enforce Stricter Safety Measures During Spring Break

Press Release: Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau

CANCUN, Mexico -- Wanting to tame its image among Spring Breakers, the Cancun tourism industry took a bold step last week. A majority of hoteliers, bar and nightclub owners, business people from non- tourism sectors, and municipal authorities signed a landmark "civility" agreement to enforce measures that will significantly reduce disorderly conduct among Spring Breakers. Their intention is to make Cancun a safer, more attractive tourist destination for every visitor during student spring breaks and summer vacations.

According to Miguel Borge Martin, executive director of the Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau, "No longer will Cancun tolerate anyone walking in the hotel zone with open drink containers, or any establishment serving alcohol to minors. Moreover, we will no longer permit the use of banners, signs and commercials that promote the consumption of alcoholic beverages or alcoholic prizes," he said.

The consortium also agreed to not serve anyone who is intoxicated and to deny entry to nightclubs and bars, both stationary or aboard moving vessels, to anyone who is intoxicated. In this unprecedented move, the Cancun tourism industry has pledged to increase security personnel to enforce not only the new standards, but all existing laws including its zero tolerance policy on the use of drugs.

In order to guarantee the successful implementation and execution of this agreement, the parties involved have decided to assemble a permanent committee comprised of representatives from the tourism industry and municipal authorities.

This committee will spearhead the effort to familiarize operators and wholesalers of both domestic and international travel packages with the new rules, and to develop with them a guide of conduct for young visitors, which will be distributed to incoming flights to Cancun.
