UNIVERSAL CITY, CA -- Michael E. Silver has been promoted to senior vice president, business and legal affairs
and Yoshi Maruyama has been promoted to senior vice president, international business planning and development
for the Universal Parks & Resorts, it was announced by Glenn Gumpel, president, international and head of global
business affairs for Universal Parks & Resorts.
In his newly expanded role, Mr. Silver will continue to serve as a business affairs executive for the division
and assist Mr. Gumpel in negotiating and reviewing all contracts, new business proposals, acquisitions/divestitures,
partnerships and sponsorships. In addition, he will serve as in-house counsel on matters involving intellectual
property, real estate development, tax issues, litigation, and labor and employment issues involving Universal's
theme park and resort properties.
In his new position, Mr. Maruyama will be responsible for developing and identifying new business opportunities
for Universal Parks & Resorts outside of the United States. Additional responsibilities include assisting with
the oversight of existing international operations, which include Universal Studios Japan and Universal Mediterranea
in Barcelona, Spain.
In announcing the promotions, Mr. Gumpel said, "As we continue to expand our parks and resorts divisions worldwide
presence, Michael and Yoshi demonstrate impressive leadership skills and an eye for business development that are
key to building our brand and our partnerships globally."
Mr. Silver has been with Universal Parks & Resorts since 1997, serving most recently as vice president, business
& legal affairs. Previously, Mr. Silver was an attorney in private practice at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe
in Los Angeles and Dewey Ballantine in New York and Los Angeles.
Mr. Silver holds a bachelor of arts degree in government from Harvard University, and a juris doctor degree from
the New York University School of Law.
Mr. Maruyama previously served as vice president, international business planning and development for Universal
Parks & Resorts. Prior to joining Universal in 1995, Mr. Maruyama was an Associate, Investment Banking and
Corporate Finance at J.P. Morgan Securities, Inc. in New York.
Mr. Maruyama earned a bachelor of science degree in operations research from Columbia University.
