Press Release: Inn of the Seventh Mountain/ Fandango Resorts
August 1, 2002
BEND, OR -- The legendary Inn of the Seventh Mountain has long been known as one of the best year-round resorts in the Northwest. Not only is this 35-year-old 300-unit resort the closest lodging to Mt. Bachelor, it is also spacious and welcoming, with a wide variety of activities all year long from the unspoiled heart of Deschutes National Forest.

In January 2002, Utah-based Fandango Resorts' Bill Shoaf and Matthew Bailey, premier resort developers and managers, announced an extensive renewal of the famous Inn, slated to begin this fall. One of Fandango's first steps toward re-positioning the Inn of the Seventh Mountain was to build a great team. And because Shoaf and Bailey together have over 45 years of hotelier experience, they knew exactly what they wanted. They took great effort in finding the following specialists.

… Clarence Hofheins is the new General Manager at Inn of the Seventh Mountain. Hofheins has spent over 15 years in the hospitality industry, 12 of those years at Robert Redford's Sundance in Utah during the resort's huge expansion. He moved to Bermuda in 1998, where he was part of the opening team for Elbow Beach following a $40 million renovation. Before joining The Inn of the Seventh Mountain, Hofheins was general manager of a boutique property in Bermuda, The Newstead Hotel. He successfully repositioned and expanded the facility by developing two new restaurants, a full-service spa, water sports area, and a fully functioning conference and catering operation.

… Davis S. Smith has been hired as the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Inn of the Seventh Mountain. His experience in the hotel industry spans more than a decade, with his latest position being general manager of the full-service Honeywell Conference Center in Redmond, Washington. Prior to that, Smith was general manager of the 234-room Doubletree Hotel in Eugene, Oregon. A native of Oregon, Smith has held a variety of positions in the hotel industry, including director of group sales for Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond, Oregon; sales manager at Sunriver Resort; sales manager at the Portland Hilton and assistant to the general manager at the Oakland Airport Hilton in California.

… Anne McDonald is the new Group Sales Manager at Inn of the Seventh Mountain. She has seven years of professional experience in the hospitality and tourism industry with a strong background in recruiting, operations, logistics, and meeting planning. She joins the Inn of the Seventh Mountain from the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon where she was the executive destination manager in charge of executive group sales.

"We are very happy with the assembled team of hotel and resort professionals," said Matthew Bailey, Executive Vice President and COO of Fandango Resorts. "We know Clarence Hofheins from Sundance and have tried to lure him before with some of our other projects. He has an impeccable sense of hospitality and embodies the style we are looking for when creating a luxury-quality, full-service condominium resort. The Inn has a venerable legacy around Mt. Bachelor, Oregon, and the Pacific Northwest in general. We wanted to secure specialists who are familiar with the nuance of the area and the Inn. Both Davis Smith and Anne McDonald more than fit the bill with their knowledge of Central Oregon and its travelers."

Fandango Resorts, originators of the deluxe-boutique condominium resort concept, is in the process of renewing The Inn of the Seventh Mountain to surpass its former glory and to make it the area's first premier full-service condominium resort. Fandango is overseeing the design development and construction phase of the renewal project, and will act as management company upon completion. Design Workshop of Aspen, Colorado has prepared the master plan, and Neo Design of Portland, Oregon is coordinating the interior design work for the Inn.

"In the past, the amenity package of a development was, at best, a pool, hot tub and fitness room," said Bill Shoaf, President and CEO of Fandango Resorts. "Today's consumer demands more, an integrated, high-quality lifestyle product. The re-design of the Inn raises the bar for the property, including beautifully designed lodging; world-class cuisine; an arts program drawing from Bend's thriving arts community; recreational amenities; and concierge services--everything necessary to meet the core emotional needs of a discriminating traveler."

The Inn of the Seventh Mountain is one of Oregon's most visually spectacular destination resorts. Situated in the heart of the pristine Deschutes National Forest, the resort is minutes from Mt. Bachelor and downtown Bend and three driving hours southeast of Portland. A popular, year-round resort, the Inn's guestrooms, suites and condominiums fit a wide range of configurations. Cross-country trails, tennis courts, swimming pools, whitewater rafting, canoe trips, horseback rides, and numerous golf courses complement the area. Winter activities of the Mt. Bachelor-Deschutes Forest-Bend region include alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and snowmobiling. Mt. Bachelor is Central Oregon's top-rated skiing destination. The Inn is typically only 20 minutes from the ski area along a straight, well-maintained stretch of Century Drive (Oregon Highway 46).
