American Skiing Company Appoints James P. Lacey Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Bolsters management team with more than 20 years of consumer marketing experience

PARK CITY, UT -- American Skiing Company (OTC: AESK) announced yesterday that it has named 20 year sales and marketing veteran James P. Lacey to the position of Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Mr. Lacey, 42, will assume responsibility for sales and marketing activities of the Company's seven resorts effective August 19, 2002 and report directly to President and CEO, B.J. Fair.

"Jim brings a unique mix of talents and a diversified perspective that will be a great asset to our management team," said Fair. "He has proven expertise in brand management as well as a strong background in "lifestyle" marketing that is critical to driving growth in the leisure industry. I am confident that under his leadership we will sharpen our marketing focus, improve customer management services and attract new visitors to our resorts."

Prior to joining American Skiing Company, Mr. Lacey served as Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing with Weider Nutrition International, a world-class lifestyle marketing organization, where he was responsible for strategic planning, advertising and consumer and trade promotions. In 1998, as Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Lacey led a strategic management team at Everlast Nutritional Products that was a pioneer in developing and marketing products in the Energy Bar and Sports Drink categories. From 1996 to 1997, Mr. Lacey served as Vice President of Sales for PowerBar, Inc., a subsidiary of Nestle Foods Corporation, where he established a national/field marketing organization with sales in excess of $100 million. Prior to joining PowerBar, Mr. Lacey held various Executive positions at Oral-B Laboratories, a division of The Gillette Company, starting as Western Regional Sales Manager, becoming Manager of Business Planning and ultimately a Product Manager. Mr. Lacey has also held various Senior Management positions at Nestle Foods Corporation and SmithKline Beecham.
